After recess we examined the cabbage a little closer and the children decided they want to taste it. Some found that is tasted quite nasty, while others really liked it. We then put the cut up pieces in a pot of freshly boiled water and watched how quickly the water turned indigo. Cabbage juice is a great way to test for acidity. If a liquid is added and it turns pink, that means it is acidic. We tested water, vinegar, lemon juice, and soap and watch for any changes.
Another group had fun using eyedroppers to add coloured vinegar to baking soda. Macaroni was added to the vinegar and they watched it change colour too.
A third group was busy making potions with all sorts of ingredients: water, paint, glitter, cabbage juice, paper, flour, salt, etc...
A team of 2 waved a board around to see if they could make objects move with air. They found that heavier objects are harder to move.
