It is so wonderful when learning is authentic and reciprocal! On a few occasions, we have been able to bring our learning buddies on a nature walk. We have taught them where to stop, that it is okay to play with sticks and throw stones in the pond, and also how to carefully cross the stream! What a great way for our kindies to spend some quality time learning and teaching! Have a lovely day! Since our daffodil discovery in the forest, we have been learning more about flowers, plants, and trees. On a visit to the library to look for plant books, I found that I had lost my seat in the rocking chair to our group of fast and tricky five year olds! I told them, “If you’re sitting in the rocking chair, you’ll have to be the teacher!” Of course, they loved this! The children took turns holding the plant book at the front of the class. They were wonderful at using the illustrations and pictures to interpret the information conveyed by the text. In their storytelling, they recounted many important details about what plants need to grow and why trees are important. Their vast scientific knowledge was very apparent! Fantastique !
In addition to their ability to use the clues in a book’s illustrations to build meaning, from my spot on the carpet, I could also see that the “readers” have clearly mastered several other conventions of print: they held the book upright, turned pages from front to back, and scanned their eyes from left to right. These are excellent pre-reading skills! With spring finally in the air, we have noticed many changes in the forest. The grass is turning green, leaves are unfurling from their buds, and flowers are beginning to sprout. On a recent walk, we came across a patch of daffodils in the forest. We talked about how daffodils usually grow from bulbs people intentionally plant in their gardens. Why are they growing randomly in the forest? Those rascally squirrels must have dug them up last fall and buried them in the forest to eat later. Amazing animal transplanters! We discussed the roles that many creatures play in the reseeding of our forest. Burrs attach to fur and fall off later in new places. When fruits are consumed by critters, their seeds are deposited in new places in the droppings of the bird or animal. The children also described how the seeds of dandelions and milkweed are attached to silky white hairs that carry the seeds away in the wind. Nature helping nature!

Thank you for those of you who were able to make it to our Mother's Day Tea (without tea- lol). The children were very excited to host and serve you in our classroom and to also show you some of the great learning that has been going on. It was such a delight to see many of the wonderful women in your child's life come and celebrate with us. We would not be able to do all of the wonderful things in our classroom without your support. Your child has a special place in all of our hearts and we thank you for allowing us to be apart of their life and their learning. Please know that you are always welcome to join our classroom, since we really do enjoy your presence! Have a wonderful evening! |
