Numeracy
Math
Math is all around us and in everything that we do. Did you know that building with 3-dimensional blocks, creating patterns and pictures with bugs or 2-dimensional figures, making puzzles, drawing pictures, looking for symmetry in objects, measuring with cubes, counting with snap cubes, and even creating faces with Mr. Potato Head develops math skills? Playing outdoors, racking leaves, planting a garden, shovelling snow, sorting socks, grocery shopping, baking and cooking, taking care of animals, and tidying up are also at the heart of developing excellent mathematical skills.
We tend to look at numeracy as a separate subject, but in reality it is part of whole curriculum learning. In our kindergarten class, our focus is on integrated, child-centred learning. Numeracy will be explored throughout the day in a natural and authentic way. We consider our classroom environment and the outdoors to be an integral part of our learning experience.
Consider playing cards or board games on a rainy day (War, Go Fish, Crazy Eights, Snakes and Ladders, Jr. Monopoly, Trouble, etc...). Number sense can be reinforced in a family-fun way. There are many dice games too that you can find. Check out this link...
