What a terrific day we had yesterday at RARE! The weather cooperated and we even had a small sprinkle of rain to keep us cool. It was very interesting to see the different areas (grasslands, forest, wetlands) all in one area. We saw how two rivers (Speed River and Grand River) converged into one (Grand River) and discovered many snails that like to live by the water. They are very different from the ones we find in our local FAH forest.
We started in a beautiful 170 year old, stone barn and then ventured to three main activities. We caught many different types of insect in our nets, carefully picked through swamp mud to find even smaller ones, and looked for different bird species through our binoculars. After a lunch break, we went on a walk through the different areas of the conversation and learned about how to preserve the area by keeping to the path and not picking the plants as we go. We also learned about bloodroot and smelled some skunkweed. What a wonderful day we had!
Monday is FAH Play Day! Please dress your child in clothing that will allow them to run and get wet! You may want to send extra clothing too. A hot dog lunch will be provided by the school too. MERCI !
Thank you again to our volunteers! We cannot go on these great adventures without you!
Have a super-dee-duper weekend!
