Kindergarten is a time for gaining independence and for learning important self-help skills. When students get stuck or have a problem (zipping a coat, finding a lost item, reaching something off a shelf, etc) we encourage them to try once more on their own. If they are still stuck, they should ask another classmate. If the student can’t help, they should approach a teacher. With support and reinforcement during learning tasks and through their every-day interactions, the students are seeing how asking for help calmly, politely, respectfully, and assertively not only yields the best results, but also helps them in their relations with peers and adults. Bravo!
We want your children to be successful at school, to feel connected within their school community, and to learn in a safe and respectful environment. Success in school involves academic achievement, but also includes knowing how to learn and how to get along with others. We have been using the Second Step program in our classroom to teach and reinforce these important skills. We recently completed the first unit in the program which led us through a series of games, activities, and puppet role plays where we practised listening effectively, focusing our attention, and using strategies for staying on task. These skills lead to greater social-emotional competency, stronger relationships, fewer problems with peers, and higher academic achievement.
