Inspired by the children’s knowledge and interest in the variety of birds and animals that remain active during the cold winter months, Mme Reilly brought a storybook to share with us called Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner. The book explores the unseen, but busy, tunnel system under the snow where small mammals often retreat for protection from cold temperatures and hungry predators. For one of her courses at Conestoga College, Mme Reilly helped create a wonderful cardboard forest play structure which she brought into our classroom. Constructed from four very large boxes, each box represents a season. The children loved crawling through the doors and openings between the sections. The detail and artistry of her creation could not be fully captured in photos, but this addition to our indoor play environment was enjoyed immensely by all!
On Monday, a group of children led Mme Reilly on a walk through our forest. Although we didn’t see very much wildlife, we noticed many signs that creatures had recently been in the area. Deer tracks were imprinted in the soft mud and scat could be seen on the trails. All the popcorn, Cheerio, and cranberry birdfeeders we hung had been gobbled!
