We continued by adding all our rows of cubes together and counted by tens up to 100. The children noticed how there are two groups of ten in vingt, three in trente, etc. They could see how this pattern continued up to 100. Several students astutely noted that when we were counting by tens, we didn’t have to re-count each individual cube, but rather we could use one tower that we knew contained 10 cubes, and compare the height of this tower with the heights of all the other groups of ten. If a tower was too long or too short, we would know that it did not contain precisely 10 cubes. Excellent!
One Watermelon Seed is a storybook about Max and Josephine, two children who plant a garden. As the children in the book planted their seeds, the students followed along by counting from one to ten in French. At the part in the story where the crops were ready to be harvested, each student was responsible for creating a row of 10 linking cubes to represent one of the vegetables. For example, different students created a row of 10 green cubes to represent watermelon, 10 orange cubes to represent pumpkins, 10 purple cubes to represent eggplant, 10 brown cubes to represent potatoes, etc. While assembling their rows, the children counted in French, practiced one-to-one correspondence, and developed fine motor skills.
