Les pommes ! Apples! This week, we looked at a few varieties of apples and observed their similarities and differences (e.g., texture, size, shape, colour, and taste). After talking about food preparation (e.g., washing our hands, fruit, table surfaces) and safety (e.g., how to handle a knife with an adult and to stay away from hot appliances), we chopped up apples, placed them in our crockpot, and waited for them to cook down to apple sauce. Not only were we making a tasty treat but we were also learning about states of matter (solid to liquid) and by chopping the apples into smaller pieces allows them to break down and turn into a liquid form much faster than leaving them whole.
With our science buddies, we again looked at our apple experiment. We noticed that the apples in the containers, without soil or worms, was breaking down faster. We surmised that the moisture from the apples, in the soil, is being absorbed into the soil and the one without soil is breaking down faster because the moisture is remaining in and around the apple, allowing decomposition to occur (e.g., mold formation and softening of the apple).
We then went out into the forest to observe living things found in fallen and decomposing trees.
We were lucky enough to have another visit from a firefighter. Last week, we learned about fire safety and prevention. We also learned about the importance of locating a spot outside of our home to meet in case we need to leave quickly.
