Intrigued by the incident, we have been spending time learning about the features and habits of birds that hunt. When we looked at pictures, the children quickly identified sharp beaks, strong feet and talons, and special wings and tail feathers as being characteristics shared by all birds of prey. Excellent hearing and eyesight also help birds of prey recognize a meal from a distance. The children already knew the names of several different birds of prey, and readily identified bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and various owls based on their appearances. Our junior naturalists are so enthusiastic and inquisitive! Their prior knowledge and ability to think like scientists continue to amaze us!
We were met with a huge surprise when we looked out our window and noticed a bird of prey eating a robin on the tarmac right outside our classroom! When we crowded around the window for a closer look, the bird flew away, carrying its dinner with it. We looked in some books, and it appears that the bird of prey in question was a kestrel. We often think of birds of prey as being big, heavy birds. In fact, the kestrel wasn’t much larger than the robin. We were surprised and impressed by its ambition (and appetite)! The children weren’t disturbed in the least. We all felt lucky to see food chain interactions up close!
