Our groups practiced our story sequencing skills by reviewing what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the book. The Mitten is also very useful for reinforcing ordinal numbers i.e. “Qui est le premier, deuxième, troisième .. animal dans la mitaine?” Using magnetic board pieces, each child chose a character and we placed the animals inside the mitten in the correct order while our group retold the story. They are excellent dramatizers and patient turn-takers! Finally, we described the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts and discussed how we know that the events in this story could not have really taken place. Storybooks are excellent tools for fostering a link between literature and mathematical ideas.
