We have a set of linking cubes that we use regularly when investigating mathematical ideas. Concepts such as counting, sorting, patterning, and measurement become more tangible when children explore using concrete materials. Lately, the children have gravitated to the cubes during free play for use in a variety of other creative pursuits! Most notably, many children have been interested in building elaborate spinners that they twirl on the tabletops and use in Beyblade-like battles against other classmates. Along the way, the children make adjustments and learn from each other to build increasingly sophisticated and functional creations. We love watching their amazing ideas in action!
