We recently collected a bag of pine cones on one of our forest walks. Using feathers and cotton balls, the pine cones were transformed into a beautiful flock of birds! The children were very intentional when selecting the colours they needed for the birds they wished to create. For example, some students wanted all pink feathers to make a flamingo, or all red to make a cardinal. A beautiful macaw was created using an assortment of red, blue, and green feathers, and a robin was made using brown and orange. One classmate very creatively made a hummingbird with the quill end of the feather pointing outward like a long, straw-like beak. Several students selected grey feathers to make various birds of prey. They even added the ear tufts found on great horned owls! The conversations among the children revealed their ability to recall the names of many different types of birds and to distinguish between the birds based on their appearances. Fantastique !
