Our daily calendar activities introduce and reinforce a number of math concepts. The children practice counting in French and extending a pattern created by the class (e.g. un cercle, un triangle, une étoile, un carré). Around the classroom, we have ventured on Shape Hunts where we look around for objects that are round (the table, jars, the clock, our Weather Wheel), triangular, square (the cubbies in the Writing Centre), and star shaped (our bulletin board borders). The children learn to recognize shapes in their environment and practice saying the names of the shapes in French. With our JK/SK buddies, we use our fingers to draw a shape in the air or in each other's palms. forming shapes in shaving foam on the table tops provides an alternative tactile experience, while continuing to foster shape identification skills and French language acquisition. We intentionally accommodate a variety of learning styles and encourage students to explore using their different senses. They use their sight when following a pattern and searching for shapes in our classroom. They practice listening to, and speaking in, French when they point out the shapes they see. The children use their sense of touch when they draw a shape in their partners' hands or form one in the shaving foam. By reinforcing skills in a variety of ways, we hope to reach each of our students in the way that best suits him or her.
