Many students wisely pointed out that while the top surfaces of the shelves would be visible, we would not be able to see the baskets and toys on the shelves. Similarly, when we drew maps of our bedrooms, several children who sleep in bunk beds realized that only the top bunk would be visible when looking down at their bedroom from above.
Through these activities, our students:
• represented familiar locations in a drawing or co-created map;
• used tools including pencils, ruler, and coloured pencils to be “cartographers” and “architects;”
• brainstormed features to be included on the map;
• included important elements of maps including a title, labels, and symbols
