Next, we noticed how the forest floor changed, in some areas, with the big melt over the weekend. An area that is normally dry, is now quite flooded. With this information, we talked about how important it is to be more careful as we explore, even if we know the area well, because water levels could be higher and normally dry places could be quite wet. As we carefully examined the stream, we noticed the beautiful patterns on the ice and noticed that under the top layer of ice, was another layer of ice. The boys took great pleasure and pride pretending to be cavemen as they broke the ice with branches and their feet. We also wondered what creatures live in the water and how they are able to survive under the ice.
On our way back to school, we talked about cattails and how they are grow near water and the importance of not walking where cattails grow. We examined the soft part of the cattail and gently applied pressure to watch it expand and the seeds fly away in small puffs. They also found tree fungus and a giant puffball!
Back in class, we watched a short video, Wild Kratts - Under Frozen Pond, which explained how creatures survive in ponds during the cold weather.
Today, the girls were excited to balance pebbles and to see which side was heavier or lighter. They also enjoyed exploring the properties of light as they used mirrors, transparent colours, and a flashlight. It was great fun to watch them work together to create new colours and watch the light as it bounced off of reflective materials.
Outside, the girls created an obstacle course that was very elaborate and challenging. Unfortunately, I was unable to get through the chopper part of the course, but it was fun trying. The boys got their thrills riding the plasma cars down the playground slope and challenged each other to see who could go the furtherest. It is so much fun to watch their creativity!
Thank you for signing and returning the SK report cards. Junior kindergarten (JK) students have been given an interview time slot on March 1st. If this time does not work for you, please send us an email. Merci !
Have a wonderful night!
