Family Winter Fun - Please join us in the classroom on Thursday, December 22, at 2pm for some hot chocolate and a cookie. Weather permitting, we may be able to take a couple of runs down the hill with the toboggans!
Mighty Maddie explores the math concept of comparing weights. The weight, or mass, of an object is not always dependent on its size. To help us understand this idea, we explored our classroom, picking up objects to compare their weights. In French, the words we used were lourd (heavy) vs. léger (light). The children quickly noted that the large sponge ball weighed less that the small steel ball. In the gym, we compared a balloon to a similar sized basketball. Although roughly the same size, the basketball was much heavier. As our conversation continued, a student observed that the balloon was filled with air and air is light. Other students expanded on this line of thought by pointing out that the basketball was also filled with air. We discussed and compared the material that each object was made from. The balloon’s thin latex was much lighter than the basketball’s sturdy rubber.
