We have been working with pattern blocks and other concrete materials and manipulatives to identify, sort, and compare geometric shapes. We began by reviewing familiar shapes such as le cercle, le carré, et le triangle, and moved on to learn about hexagons, trapezoids, and rhombuses (les hexagones, les trapèzes, et les losanges). The children counted the number of sides and corners to help identify the shapes. They noticed how shapes could fit together to make other shapes. For example, we can use two trapezoids, three rhombuses, or six triangles to make a hexagon. The children went on to create pictures and build designs and patterns. Bravo!
Through these activities, our students:
• explored, experimented, and concentrated;
• identified shapes and their properties;
• used math vocabulary and geometric terms;
• decomposed 2D shapes into smaller shapes;
• sorted blocks by colour, shape, thickness, and material.
Bonne journée !
