Young children engage in significant mathematical thinking and reasoning in their play. In this small, spontaneous investigation, the children practiced counting and thought about quantity and number relationships. They measured, using non-standard units of the same size, and compared lengths. Fantastique !
During our Math time this week, we have been working with dominoes. At the start, we sat in a circle and each child placed his or her domino on the carpet so that we could all see each other’s tiles. The students counted the dots and pointed out classmates who also had the same numbers as themselves. By identifying and aligning all the matches we were able to create a domino “train”. Without prompting, several students laid on the carpet beside the train. We counted how many dominoes made up each child’s length. “Who is the tallest and shortest? Will we need more dominoes or fewer dominoes to calculate his/her height?”
