We are finally seeing signs of spring! It is hard to believe that the tobogganing hill we were sliding down only a few short weeks ago is now bare! The children love to see how much speed they can pick up running down the hill. Every layer of snow that melts has revealed a new layer of “treasures” waiting to be discovered. We often return to school with a bag full of discarded bottles, shiny stones, milkweed, and seed pods.
The melting snow and recent rainy days have created puddles and flowing water that we can’t help but jump and play in! Boots, splash pants, and dry socks come in very handy! On our walks, we have noticed the return of the ducks and geese. From a safe distance, we watch them swim in the pooled water, looking for nesting spots.
As we continue along the trail, we regularly meet walkers also out enjoying the spring. The children are always friendly and polite, offering “hellos” to familiar neighbours and sharing tales of our adventures. It is so important to us that children feel connected to our community and its residents.
There is a clearing in the woods that we continue to regularly stop at on our way back to the school. There are many recurring play themes that the children act out in the forest: Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, puppies and kittens, and evil wizards. The trees, rocks, and fallen logs provide natural obstacles where we can climb, hide, and explore. We challenge our bodies and build strength, coordination, balance, and stamina.
We will continue to spend lots of time outdoors. Please presume that your child will begin the day outside and continue to send him or her dressed for the weather. Temperatures fluctuate during the day and it is common for the children to add or remove layers of clothing as needed. Extra dry socks and mittens always come in handy. Merci !
