We have a set of cards with photos of a various birds of prey, songbirds, and exotic birds. The children enjoy sorting the cards and pointing out the interesting features of each bird. We had a very interesting conversation comparing the beaks of several different birds. Birds of prey have hooked beaks for ripping meat. Humming birds have thin straw-like beaks for sucking nectar from flowers. Ducks and swans have bills for eating water plants. Toucans have massive beaks for eating large tropical fruits and nuts. Cardinals and chickadees have beaks appropriate for eating seeds. The children did a fantastic job describing how a bird’s physical features make it well suited for the food it eats and the habitat in which it lives.
